ABSTRACT

Comparison of Cilostazole and Aspirin in treatment of peripheral vascular disease in diabetics. Comparative study. Fatima Memorial Hospital, Shadman, Lahore from October 2005 to July 2006. Fifty five diabetics patients were included in the study, regardless of presence or absence of symptoms and signs of peripheral vascular diseases. Complications of diabetes such as neuropathy, retinopathy, diabetic amytrophy and foot deformities were assessed in detail. Patients who had peripheral vascular diseases with [Doppler] ankle brachial index measurement were divided randomly given cilostazole, [pletaal] and aspirin. Ankle brachial index measurement was again done after three months of therapy. One way Anova was used to test the efficacy of aspirin and cilestazole. The F ratio [P<0.05] showed a significant difference between three groups and post HOC test showed cilostazole is more effective. Cilostazole, phosphodiestrase III inhibitor improves symptoms, signs and ABI measurements in diabetic patients when given for three months. However aspirin had no significant effect on improvement of such parameters

ABSTRACT

A retrospective study of 36 consecutive patients with extremity vascular trauma managed by the South Surgical Ward trauma team between February 1998 to January 2000. All our patients were men with a mean age of 27 years. The commonest clinical presentation.was with haemorrhage [75%] or ischemia [58.4%]. The mode of injury was gunshot wounds [75%], blunt trauma [20%] and iatrogenic injuries [5%]. The most commonly injured arteries were the superficial femoral [27.5%], the popliteal [24%] and the brachial [24%]. The techniques utilized for.repair of the arterial injuries were autogenous reverse vein grafting [51.7%], end-to-end anastomosis [27.6%].and lateral repair [3.4%]. 17.2% of the arterial injuries were ligated. 43% of the venous injuries underwent lateral venorrhaphy while 57% were ligated. Tri-compartment leg fasciotomies were carried out in 14 patients The commonest complication was vein graft thrombosis [16.7%]. Our amputation rate and mortality were both at 6.9%. Early transport of the patient to a good surgical facility, good surgical judgement and the liberal use of. vein grafts improves the outcome in vascular injuries of the extremities

ABSTRACT

Chromium and other trace elements of some hypoglycemic plants, Gymnema sylvestre. Momordica charantia, Caralluma edulis and Berberus lycium, widely used as herbal drugs by local practitioner were determined by Atomic absorption Spectrophotometry [ASS] and Flameless Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. Chromium contents of these herbal drugs were compared with the reported daily requirements and experimental therapeutic concentration and relationship of chromium contents with their hypoglycemic activity was examined

ABSTRACT

We reviewed the files of 80 successive patients with native and prosthetic valve endocarditis admitted to Riyadh armed forces hospital. Neurological complications [NC] occurred in 28 [35%] patients. The valves involved were mitral in 12 [43%] aortic in eight [29%] combined mitral and aortic lesions in six [21%] and others in two [7%]. The common causative organisms were streptococci in 12 [43%] staphylococcus aureus and staphylococcus epidermides, both occurring in four [14%]. Compared to the 52 infective endocarditis patients with no neurological complications [NNC] the NC occurred more frequently in male patients those with aortic valve lesion those with atrial fibrillation those with delayed therapy and those with causative organisms being streptococci. Eleven patients died [39%], 12 [43%] recovered with motor sequelae, six [21%] had seizure disorder, and five [18%] had full recovery. The frequency of neurological complications and mortality is comparable to those reported in the literature; however the frequency of strokes was higher in our patients

ABSTRACT

This is the era of science and technology. Great advances have been made in this century in the field of medical science. The aim of this paper is to correlate these developments with the teachings of Quran and the principals of healthy living laid down by the prophet [PBUH]. It is so remarkable to note that the sayings of the prophet in the early seventh century [A.D.], like the principles of cleanliness, eating and drinking habits, urination, defecation, marital relations, the use of mistake [tooth brush], sleeping habits, the use of honey, fig and olive oil have been proved now by the medical science to be best suited for health. An interesting correlation has been found between the verses of the Quran, the sayings of the Prophet [PBUH] and recent medical discoveries

ABSTRACT

Thin layer chromatograph was applied for the separation of sterol esters fatty acids, triglycerides and cholesterol in order to separate the fractions of neutral lipids while GLC was employed to determine the fatty acid composition of the fatty acids fraction obtained from Prunus arminiaca L seeds

ABSTRACT

Plant lipids were studied on a number of ordinary and silver nitrate impregnated silica gel TLC systems. A good resolution of the plant lipids was achieved. Specially the phytosteryl acetates showed a better resolution on silver nitrate plates when developed in pure chloroform [TLC system I-C]. Similarly for the fatty acid methyl esters [FAME] silver nitrate plates in benzene; hexane [TIC system I-a] exhibited a preference over the other systems used. Tentatively series of saturated and unsaturated phytosterols and fatty acids were detected in the phytosteryl acetates and fatty acid methyl esters of Spinacea oleracea, respectively. Phytosterols, phytosteryl esters and free fatty acids were identified in the lipids of Malvastrum tricuspidatum, Chenopodium murale, Medicago denticulata, and Rumex dentatus

ABSTRACT

With [2-14C] acetic acid for 72 hours incubation all the lipids of Asterias rubens were labelled. About 1.5 x 107 dpm was found associated with the total lipids and 1.1 x 107 dpm in the phospholipids. The major labelled components were triglycerides, steryl esters, sterols, 1, 2 diglycerides in the neutral lipids. Whereas in the phospholipids cerebrosides phosphatidyl ethethanolmine, phosphatidyl lecithin were significantly labeled

ABSTRACT

Variation in the rate of esterification of [4-14C] cholesterol with the fatty acids were found in Asterias rubens. In 24 hour incubation about equal proportions of saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids were esterified. In 7 days polyunsaturated fatty acids showed a greater affinity than any other class, while in 72 days saturated moieties were favoured more than polyunsaturated components. Most probably seasonal variations effect the extent of esterification of sterols. 0.5 alpha-Cholest-7-4beta-ol known as the major constituent of the free sterols of Asterias rubens was also the principal component of the steryl esters

ABSTRACT

The neutral lipids of starfish Asterias rubens were characterized into triglycerides, 1:3 diglycerides, 1:2 diglycerides, monoglycerides, free fatty acids, and sterols. Predominant fatty acid found in all classes of the neutral lipids was C20:1 except for triglycerides where C 20:5 was greater. In fed animals increasing% ages of C16:1, C18:0, C18:1, and C20:1 and decreasing% ages of C14:0, C22:1, C24:1, C20:5 and C22:6 were found while no change was found with C16:0 for the triglyceride fraction. The phaspholipids in addition to phosphatidyl ethanolamine, phosphatidyl choline, phosphatidyl inositol, phosphatidyl serine were found to contain also cholesetrol sulphates. The neutral lipids appeared to be more labile than the phospholipids
